Harn character - Kaelyn of Shiran
History:
Kaelyn was born in the Thardic city of Shiran on Halene
16 of the year 699. Kaelyn is the eldest of six children: four girls and
two boys. Jusinetine, Kaelyn's father, is a clothier in Shiran and a well
respected member of the mercantilers guild. Alicias, his mother, is mainly
a housewife but also helps Jusinetine as a seamstress. Jusinet, Kaelyn's
great-grandfather (from whom Jusinetine got his name), was a landowner in
Tharda but financial ruin reduced the family to the role of freemen.
Jusinetine dreams of one day reclaiming the family's great station. At
the age of eight, a childhood accident put Kaelyn at odds with
his father (thus assuring his younger brother the family inheritance)
Because of this accident Kaelyn spent a year with Lessorir, his mother's
brother in Coranan. His uncle taught him to play the harp, a skill and
passion which guides Kaelyn for the rest of his life. After returning
home, Kaelyn started taking harp lessons and after eight years is admitted
into the Harpers' guild. Despite Jusinetine's advice, Kaelyn rejected the
mandatory one year of military service in the Thardic legions. Jusinetine
reluctantly pays a huge sum to a Thardic senator to "officially exempt"
Kaelyn from duty. As Kaelyn's bardic skills improved, he began to
travel, plying his trade in taverns and in public squares. This not
only broadened his horizons but also kept him away from his father's
wrathful tantrums. Kaelyn regularly traveled to Coranan to perform with
Deqora the Harpist, an elderly musician of Jarin decent that he'd met
while staying with his Uncle Lessorir. It is Lessorir and Deqora that
are Kaelyn's mentors and who have taught him his craft.
Description:
Kaelyn has, at first appearance, a foppish air about
him. At 5'3" and 115 pounds, he compensates for his small frame with
clothing of flamboyant style and vibrant color. Kaelyn has auburn hair and
blue-green eyes. His skin is fair, bordering on pale, and he tends to burn
easily in the sun. His hands are somewhat larger than proportionate, and
the fingers are calloused from playing the harp. He shaves regularly, as he
cannot seem to grow a decent beard, and bathes whenever the occasion
presents itself. Kaelyn's voice is a rich baratone, suprisingly deep for his
small frame. He tends to force his voice into deeper registers when he
speaks, in another attempt to compensate for his stature, though he's not
above pitching his voice higher if he thinks that sounding younger will
forstall a violent encounter.
Timeline:
- Kaelyn is born on Halene 16, 699.
- In 707, at the age of 8, Kaelyn accidentily stabs his younger brother
Kaenon with a pair of his father's scissors, nearly killing the boy. His
father, outraged, sends Kaelyn away for a year to stay with his mother's
family.
- In 716, at the age of 17, Kaelyn is accepted into the Harpers' guild.
- In 717, at the age of 18, Kaelyn makes his first trip out of Shiran
as a journeyman harpist, traveling to Coranan. At this time, his father
angrily "buys" Kaelyn's freedom from legionnare service.
- In 719, at the age of 20, Kaelyn meets Sir Sedera Giruval of
Korri, an injured knight of Larane travelling to a temple in Tashal.
- In 720, at the age of 21, Kaelyn is convinced to travel to Tashal
with Sir Sedera, if only to enjoy the adventure of being on the road
with the caravans on the Salt Route.
